Relationship satisfaction

7 questions · 2 min

This short questionnaire asks how satisfied you feel in your romantic relationship: whether your needs are met, how much you love your partner and how the relationship compares with your hopes.

It works for any kind of romantic relationship, whether you’re dating, living together or married. It’s about how you feel now, and that can change over time.

What it shows

How satisfied you feel with your romantic relationship right now.

What it doesn’t

A judgement of your relationship or your partner, or a prediction of the future.

Who it’s for

This test may suit you if you’d like a quiet moment to check in with how your relationship feels: during a happy patch, a rocky one, or a time of change like moving in together, having a baby or a busy spell at work.

Some couples like to take it separately and then talk about their answers. It can also be a helpful starting point before couples counselling, or a way to notice how things change over time.

Questions people ask

What does the Relationship Assessment Scale measure?

It measures how satisfied you feel with your romantic relationship overall. The questions cover how well your needs are met, how much you love your partner, how many problems there are, and how the relationship compares with what you hoped for.

How long does the RAS take?

There are 7 questions, and most people finish in about 2 minutes. Each question has its own set of five answers.

How is the RAS scored?

Each answer is scored from 1 to 5, and two questions worded the other way round are flipped first. Your score is the average, from 1 to 5, where higher means more satisfied. There are no official cut-offs, so the result is described in thirds of the range.

Can my partner take it too?

Yes. It works for any kind of romantic relationship, and each of you answers for how you feel. Your scores may differ, and that can be a useful thing to talk about together.

What if my score is low?

A low score isn’t a judgement of your relationship or your partner, and it doesn’t predict the future. Talking with your partner, someone you trust or a couples counsellor can help. If you ever feel unsafe with a partner, you can find free, confidential helplines at findahelpline.com.

How often can I retake it?

About once a month. How you feel in a relationship can change, so taking it again can show how things are moving.

Where it comes from

Developed by psychologist Susan Hendrick in 1988.
